CATEGORY DETAILS:
Entries in this category include all types of staircase projects, and are judged by Stairbuilders and Manufacturers Association. Submissions may include new installations or overlays, in either a residential or commercial application.

WHAT MAKES THIS STAIRCASE UNIQUE:
This year’s winning staircase took Rick Farrell of Woodwright Hardwood Floor Company more than two months to manufacture, and another four weeks to install.

“The design team wanted 6” beam treads in a very contemporary style. We produced an engineered floor plank with a 4-millimeter lamella resawn from our edge grain treads. The sample was made accidentally using rift and quarter-sawn white oak, which inadvertently produced a plain sawn butcher block effect that the architect loved,” explains Farrell. “The hollow box tread components were installed over an elaborate steel structure incorporating a massive steel shoe to house the glass railing. We custom fabricated and shop-finished more than 100 treads as well as solid nosings and flooring.”

Detail of Finish Process: Shop finished through Woodwright’s small UV line.
