U.S. Forest Serve Reorganization Plans Suspended by Courts: On Tuesday, a federal court temporarily blocked efforts by the Trump Administration to restructure the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that Secretary Brooke Rollins announced in July 2025. That plan sought to move much of USDA’s agency headquarters staff, including the Forest Service, in Washington, D.C. to regions around the country. The order from the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California prohibits officials from moving congressionally appropriated funds to underwrite costs associated with the reorganization. The order was victory for the American Federation of Government Employees and the AFL-CEO who sued the department over the issue. We will continue to monitor developments in this space.
Last Weeks of Campaign Season Empty D.C.: As is typically the case, the last weeks of the 2026 campaign season have commanded the attention of members of Congress and their staff. Most have left the capital to campaign in their home states. While skeleton crews remain, it is very quiet on the Hill.
However, now is the perfect time for industry members to connect with those running for office and share your thoughts on what the 2027 federal agenda should look like. Attend town halls and other events where candidates will be speaking…and hopefully taking questions. Invite those on the campaign trail to visit your facility and give them a first-hand look at your operations, those you employ, and the products your make. The Hardwood Federation Facility Tour Guide provides information about how to connect with the staff in charge of scheduling. Engagement is always crucial, and you can help by reinforcing hardwood industry challenges and opportunities to those running for re-election and those who may be new to Congress.
