All American Floor Sanding and Installation in Summerfield, Florida, has been honored with the 2025 NWFA Best in Parquetry award for a project that began with a routine sand-and-refinish job in a flood-damaged home. When the floors proved beyond repair, the company saw an opportunity to do something meaningful for the homeowners, who had faced significant challenges. They sourced reclaimed heart pine, a species favored by the team, originally milled a century ago to build houses and now valued for its distinct character.

The 160-square-foot dining room, which the homeowners felt deserved a unique touch, became the focus of a basketweave pattern with book-matched end-grain blocks. Inspiration came unexpectedly when the team noticed the tight grain of 2×3 heart pine studs used as spacers in the delivery, wood intended for disposal. Recognizing their potential, they repurposed them, chopping and squaring them up despite the labor-intensive process, as they were likely studs from an old house covered in glue and grime.

With assistance from Robson Lopes of Home Team Flooring in Charleston, South Carolina, the team milled all wood on-site, ripping the 2 1/4-inch planks to 2 inches, removing the tongue and groove, and laying the solid blocks with full-spread glue and nails. Finished with a matte sheen, the floor’s beauty emerged during sanding, revealing a striking pattern. These durable blocks, capable of being sanded countless times, ensure longevity, reflecting the company’s skill and commitment to creating a lasting, meaningful addition to the home.
