Jefferson Do Carmo started Brown Oaks Flooring over 20 years ago. His wife, Ashley, became his business partner in 2015. Jefferson is a NWFA Certified Installer, Sand and Finisher, and most recently Sales Advisor. Ashley is a NWFA Certified Sales Advisor. Jefferson and Ashley outline tips for successfully running a business as a married couple.
What is your background? Jefferson has been a floor layer for over 20 years. Ashley has a background in marketing and is currently going back to school for her degree in Business Management.
What are your roles at Brown Oaks Flooring? Jefferson supervises the crews, manages supplies, and provides communication with established builder relationships. Ashley focuses on developing relationships that can take time and nurturing, mainly homeowners and designers. Ashley also manages the office, writes contracts, and handles the finances.
Why did you both become NWFA Certified Professionals? Ashley encouraged Jefferson to become a NWFA Certified Installer and Sand and Finisher to showcase the skillset and talent she knew he had. Jefferson wanted to set his company apart from others to gain more custom design jobs with a more exclusive clientele. Jefferson admitted it wasnāt easy, he knew it would be a time commitment and had apprehensions about the tests. But after completing his certifications, he has been able to confidently justify his bids to customers explaining why his education and certifications matter. He is also enjoying jobs that challenge him beyond the average straight lay. Ashley wanted to be seen in the industry as a knowledgeable source. She knew the importance of having both of their names listed on the NWFA Professionals Directory to market their business.
What advice would you give to anyone considering working with their spouse? Jefferson and Ashley know it is important to understand and honor the balance of work and home life. “Sometimes you force yourself to leave work at the door and focus on your kidās dance lessons.” Jefferson and Ashley set rules at work and follow those like they would with any other co-worker. They give the advice to see the strengths your partner brings and allow them to spearhead that side of the business.
