In Memoriam: William C. “Bill” Sutton

The Denver Hardwood team is mourning the loss of William C. “Bill” Sutton. Bill passed away peacefully in his home on August 19, 2017 at the age of 88.

Bill was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on March 20, 1929. In 1956, he moved his family west to Denver, Colorado and established the W.C. Sutton Company, a hardwood flooring supplier. In 1981, the Hamar family partnered with Bill to open Denver Hardwood where Bill worked for most of his career until retiring in 2009. Bill was in attendance for the Grand Opening of Denver Hardwoods new distribution center and was honored by current and past employees. He commented to his son Mark, “I just cannot believe how big Denver Hardwood is now!”

Bill pioneered the wholesale flooring distribution business and worked tirelessly to cultivate relationships with customers and vendors. He was respected and loved by all who met him, and he used to joke that he, “never met a stranger!” Bill will be missed by many but his legacy will live on forever.

  1. I first met Mr. Bill when I was in high school. His southern accent and warehouse full of hardwood were the first impressions but his customer service and knowledge were the lasting impressions that I hold and judge every distributed by to this day. His passion for the business was infectious! He is already missed. My condolences to the family.
