WHAT MAKES THIS FLOOR UNIQUE:
In a bid to revitalize the lobby of their commercial building, the owners sought to replace the outdated flooring installed back in the 1980s with a sleek, contemporary design. The goal was to infuse the space with a fresh, modern aesthetic while retaining an air of sophistication.
The original wood floor was removed to make way for the new design, which incorporated maple, white oak, and marble elements. Careful consideration was given to every detail, particularly in creating a striking circular pattern that serves as the lobbyās centerpiece.
To achieve the perfect circle, engineered, unfinished flooring was chosen for its flexibility and straightness. Full-length material was utilized for the outer circle to eliminate visible joints, ensuring a seamless and polished look. Mitered angle triangles in the outer circle added visual interest, while stained oak triangles flanking the interior square provided contrast and depth.
Crafting the circle presented its own set of challenges. Specialized tools such as Festool routers and custom-made track sections were employed to ensure precision and consistency. The tracks then were anchored to solid lumber to prevent unwanted flex. Working around existing columns posed additional obstacles, necessitating using plywood templates to navigate tight spaces.
In tandem with the flooring installation, a team of tile specialists installed marble selected by the architects and designers, further enhancing the lobbyās upscale ambiance.
Given that the building remained operational throughout the renovation process, all work was conducted at night over the course of five weeks, with an additional week and a half dedicated to sanding and finishing. This meticulous approach allowed for minimal disruption to business operations while ensuring a flawless result.
