Last year, Jakko Woudenberg, who is based in the Netherlands and is known as the Dutch Wood Artist, completed a recreation of Rembrandt’s famous painting, “The Night Watch,” entirely out of wood. Now, the wood flooring industry will have the chance to see it during the NWFA Expo, taking place April 21-23, 2026, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
This comes after Lenny Hall with Endurance Floor Company led an effort garnering donations from wood flooring professionals to cover the cost of overseas freight and transport to bring this work of art to the United States. On the GoFundMe page, Hall stated: “Seeing this incredible piece in person is an unforgettable experience. More importantly, we hope it will inspire young people to view the wood floor trade as more than just hard labor, but as a true art form—one that combines skill, creativity, and passion. We believe that anyone, regardless of background, can aspire to create something beautiful from wood that brings people together and stirs powerful emotions. No matter who you are, we are all drawn to art and its ability to move the soul.”
More than 50 species of wood were used in the project. Pieces of the wood were sawn into 1 cm by 1 cm pixels, totaling 195,000 pieces. At 390 cm high by 500 cm wide, the finished product ended up larger than the original Rembrandt and shows sections that were once cut off the painting. The entire process took Woudenberg four years to complete, and it was unveiled in the spring of 2025 at Amsterdam Amstel Station. The NWFA Expo marks “The Night Watch” in wood’s United States debut.
“It was an emotional moment for me to hear that ‘The Night Watch’ in wood had arrived in the United States and cleared customs,” says Woudenberg. “Being there in person, with ‘The Night Watch’ at the Expo will likely bring even more of those emotions. I’m incredibly grateful to the people and companies who made this possible, especially my friend Lenny Hall.”
Woudenberg will also give a presentation during Expo titled, “Channeling Your Inner Artist as a Craftsman” on Thursday, April 23 at 9:15 a.m.
