For decades, solid wood flooring was the standard and installed in almost every situation. The Antique Reclaimed market has boomed in the last decade, however, materials are becoming less readily available for some manufacturers. Traditional Milled Flooring is produced from mature, slowgrowth standing dead and fallen timber. Pre-Finished or Site-Finished?
There are two key options regarding the finish of the floor, which involves a pre-finish at the manufacturer or having the contractor finish it on site. There’s a trade-off that has much to do with time and cost factors that go along with installation. It’s beneficial for contractors to know where their flooring is milled, and if selected, where it’s pre-finished. A site-finished floor is sanded and finished after the unfinished flooring is properly acclimated and installed – often with no bevel. Site finishing a floor also allows the highest level of customization and creativity. A factory-finished floor provides a product that is able to be installed and immediately lived on. There is no curing time or need for additional prep or sanding of the floor on-site. Whichever option works best for you, it’s important to work with a qualified installer who can give insight on their capabilities throughout the process.
