August 8, 2018 marked the seventeenth consecutive year Derr Flooring Company presented its annual scholastic excellence award.
The scholarship program was the original brainchild of Chester Derr, Jr. and his late sister Gayle Holden. It is one of many ways the Derrs continue to give back to the employees. To date, the Derr family has provided financial support for students in the amount of $133,000. Scholarships are offered to the children and grandchildren of Derr employees who are seeking to further their education beyond the high school level.
The scholarship committee selected two people from a highly qualified group of twelve applicants. The honored recipients chosen this year were Alyssa Mahaffey, a public relations major at Syracuse University and Kevin Touchette, a part time driver for Derr Flooring and finance major at East Stroudsburg University.
Applicants must submit the following information; current GPA, Official high school or college transcript, a list of extra curricular activities or school events, religious or social activities as well as an essay in answering the question of āIf you had the authority to change your school in a positive way, what specific changes would you make?ā
A luncheon followed the presentation of Scholarships.
