Rooted in Appalachia: Mullican’s 40 Years of Made in the USA Craftsmanship

For Mullican, “Made in the USA” is more than a label — it’s a supply chain, a stewardship ethic, and a promise of consistency that starts in the Appalachian Mountains and ends underfoot in American homes.

Walk into Mullican Flooring’s Johnson City, Tennessee, headquarters and you can trace a straight line from that forest to the finished floor.

“We’ve built our reputation on Appalachian hardwoods and American craftsmanship,” says Pat Oakley, president of Mullican Flooring. “When you know where your wood comes from and you make the product at home, you deliver the character, quality and accountability people expect.”

Now in its 40th year, Mullican’s story is rooted in the Appalachian Mountains. That lineage comes into sharp focus with Tennessee Artisan, the company’s newest engineered collection.

Sourced from Appalachian white oak and hickory and finished in Johnson City, Tennessee Artisan is a half-inch sliced-face engineered product that presents an expansive canvas — 7.65-inch-wide, lightly brushed planks in random lengths up to 6 feet — tempered by a low-gloss aluminum oxide finish and backed by a 50-year finish warranty.

Mullican’s Made in the USA commitment isn’t a single product; it’s a way of doing business that is reflected across the portfolio.

Beyond Tennessee Artisan, the company provides a range of domestically produced engineered lines, in both prefinished and unfinished formats, spanning 3- to 7-inch widths, multiple thicknesses, and a broad palette of visuals and species to meet varied design briefs and budgets.

On the solid side, Mullican’s domestic offerings feature 3/4-inch collections in hickory, maple and oak, with surface treatments that include hand-sculpted, lightly brushed, smooth and wire brushed textures.

“From builder-grade engineered options to heritage solids, we want retailers and installers to have a full spectrum of American-made choices — species, textures, widths and price points,” Oakley says. “Tennessee Artisan is just the latest expansion in a product portfolio that is rooted in Appalachian hardwoods. This means our customers get the consistency and character that define premium U.S. flooring.”

Sustainability is built into Mullican’s domestic model. All prefinished U.S.-manufactured products bear the Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable logo — based on U.S. Forest Service inventory data (2018) indicating that, on average, 2.45 new trees grow for every one that dies or is harvested in the Appalachian Mountains. In addition, Mullican was the industry’s first domestic hardwood producer to advocate for Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. (AHMI)-verified sustainable Appalachian timber.

Like the broader hardwood industry, Mullican is watching the evolving trade environment. The federal Section 232 review of timber, lumber and derivative wood products remains underway, and the specific implications for flooring are not yet defined. Regardless of the outcome, Mullican’s domestic, Appalachian-sourced model positions retailers and homeowners for continuity in supply and confidence in origin.

“Made in the USA matters because it shortens the distance between promise and delivery,” Oakley says. “It means tighter quality control, quicker response and fewer surprises for our customers. And for the homeowner, there’s confidence in having traceable wood, American workmanship and a floor that reflects their values.”

Ultimately, that combination — regional wood, U.S. production and service built for North American homes — explains why Mullican leans so hard into Appalachia.

“At the end of the day, people want floors with a sense of place,” Oakley says. “For us, that place is here in Appalachia, and we’re proud to put ‘Made in the USA’ on what we make.”
