Star of the Show – 2022 WFOY: Members’ Choice

Integrity Floors | Tampa, Florida

In a performing arts center where passion and expression abound, Corey Cathcart of Integrity Floors put his team’s own creativity and eye for excellence to work to create the 2022 Members’ Choice Wood Floor of the Year.

“The floor is in a local performing arts center, and we had done other work at the facility. It was a really cool opportunity for us. The medallion actually lines up with the stairs that wrap around it, which we also did,” explains Cathcart. “Originally, it started as a prefinished engineered product, with a dark color and a light color to form the differences. Based on it being a commercial space, we achieved the same results using a rift-sawn walnut and a rift-sawn white oak. We selected based on the color and depth of the grain. It gave us a very nice dimensional look around the star.”

The star is 28’ across, and the angles were the real challenge, getting everything to line up.

“The middle medallion is the physical center of the building, and it matches up to details on the ceiling, and it is actually the reverse of the ten-sided star. We had to have all of those points intersect so that the inside medallion would match up,” explains Cathcart. “It was laid out using two pentagrams. Each pentagram has five sides, and we just mirror-imaged that to get 10.”

Elsewhere on the project, on-site bent wood and brass were used at the terrazzo step. Brass outlines the wood floor at the floor’s perimeter at each step and doorway. Using rift white oak and walnut in the star, the natural colors of the wood created contrast and dimension to the inlay.

“I can’t stress enough how important NWFA education was in regards to this project. All of the steps were things learned at the advanced schools, such as the bending of the radius and the layout. It was great to be able to put it into the job,” says Cathcart. “Lenny Hall was very helpful with the geometry and the layout. Credit also goes to the great regional instructors, the continuing education, and the network of NWFA contractors we could reach out to.”
