The 2021 NWFA Wood Floor of the Year winner for Best Color/Finish and Textured Wood was designed for homeowners who desired maximum uniqueness and creativity throughout their new home.

“This was a new construction of a $4 million home where the homeowners wanted everything in the house to be unique. Every room in the house had a theme that needed to be followed from floor to ceiling,” explains installer, Mike Somodean of MSCS Inc., in Roswell, Georgia. “The theme for this particular room was ‘Modern French,’ with a color palette that originated from the cabinets.”

Working from the cabinet color, the homeowners and their designer envisioned a room with a classic feel with herringbone, but a touch of modernity via color selection.

“Our favorite thing to do is play with reactive finishes and create custom colors. For this project, we brought the client and their designer back to our finishing lab where we created colors based on the client’s vision, which involved hues of blue,” says Carmen Rodriquez, CMO of Eutree.

Eutree is an Atlanta-based manufacturer of hardwood flooring, prefinished, unfinished, and engineered wood for outdoor and indoor use. They also produce dimensional lumber, live edge slabs, and work with salvaged, reclaimed wood, which they use in a variety of projects.

The 5″ x 20″ boards in this project were prefinished using different combinations of reactive stains, hardwax oils, and pigmented maintenance oils to create four different colors to match the client’s vision.

MSCS 2“We used Ciranova reactives to formulate custom hues of blues and grey to really compliment the space. We also used some Rubio Monocoat hard wax oils,” explains Rodriquez. “We used our roll-coating machine to apply the custom colors to the wood so that it would be consistent. Once that was finished, we hand-wiped and inspected each piece to ensure quality control.”

In addition to the colors, Eutree paid a lot of attention to the textures of the flooring.

“On this floor, the client wanted plenty of dimension and texture, so we used a heavy wire brush to achieve the look we needed to achieve,” says Rodriquez. “Once the flooring was finished, our install partner, MSCS Inc. was able to take the planks and install them. Mike did a fantastic job of installing the pattern, which is a huge part of making the floor turn out as fantastic as it did. We’re very proud of the floor.”
