Hardwood Federation Encouraging Lawmakers to Co-sponsor Shipping Relief Legislation

On August 10, Reps. John Garamendi (D-CA) and Dusty Johnson (R-SD) introduced the “Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021 (OSRA)” (H.R. 4996). This legislation would make updates to the federal “Shipping Act.” Specifically, H.R. 4996 would authorize the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) to prevent ocean carriers from declining export cargo if the containers can be loaded safely and within a reasonable time frame.

The Hardwood Federation and its coalition partners, ranging from the American Farm Bureau Federation to the American Chemistry Council, are campaigning to increase the number of co-sponsors to give OSRA momentum moving forward, including support in the U.S. Senate. So far, a bipartisan group of 30 House lawmakers has signed up as co-sponsors.
