EPF to Introduce Low Emission Standards for Formaldehyde

The European Panel Federation (EPF), based in Brussels, is launching a new attempt to further lower formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels by launching the European Low Emission Standard.

This voluntary standard sets different emission limits for individual product groups. A limit of 0.065 ppm was set for particleboard and plywood; this limit is left at 0.1 ppm for MDF/HDF, OSB, hard fiberboard and wood-fiber insulation board, as found in the existing E1 emission class. Determinations are made using the chamber method set forth in EN 717-1.
